Tonuso vzw & Zampone architects asked us to design and repurpose the garden of the residential youth care in Laken, where children from diverse backgrounds can feel at home. The caregivers and children were invited to contribute to the design—a garden against bullying—and these ideas were collected in an initial design plan, models, and sketches. The idea: a place to play together, be active, have a secluded space to play music or have some quiet time.
Our main intervention involved creating openings in the existing masonry wall, allowing a bike path to circle the garden in a playful loop. Small islands of grass, sand, and tiles provide spaces for play, while the rest of the garden is preserved as a wild habitat.
Together with Tonuso vzw we obtained a grant to turn the plans into reality.
