new-land for Nieuwland Primary School
The new playground at Nieuwland/Sint Joris Primary School in Brussels, designed by Zampone architects, had to overcome unique challenges: contaminated soil, limited space & budget and the need to combine bike storage, circulation, a sports field, and creative play for all ages.
We designed the play zone as an urban square, shaded by large, first-class trees, with an introverted sports field. Simple additions allow children to climb and hang. A pergola with greenery connects to the field, while the covered bench doubles as seating and a spectator area, creating a multifunctional space for movement, play, and exploration.
The layout leaves ample room to run, dance, cycle and climb, thus encouraging movement and exploration.
